What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections?
Anti-wrinkle injections work by gently relaxing specific facial muscles to soften lines, reduce creases, and create a smoother, more refreshed appearance. These injections are particularly effective at treating dynamic lines the lines that appear when you smile, frown, or raise your eyebrows.
- However, it is important to note that anti-wrinkle injections are not suitable for smoothing static lines on the lower face. Lines such as those on the cheeks, smoker’s lines around the mouth, or the nose-to-mouth (nasolabial) folds are best treated with dermal fillers, which replace lost volume rather than relax muscles.
- In many cases, the most natural-looking results are achieved by combining anti-wrinkle injections with dermal fillers, depending on your individual assessment.

Possible Risks & Complications
As with any injectable treatment, there are potential risks, although these are uncommon. They may include:
- Bruising
- Redness
- Mild swelling
- Headache
- Infection (rare)
- Temporary eyebrow or eyelid heaviness or drooping (also rare)
Before Your Treatment
Your clinician will advise you during your consultation if there is anything specific you personally should consider before treatment. To help ensure the best possible treatment experience, we recommend:
- Arriving with clean skin (no makeup on the treatment area).
- Avoiding alcohol for 24 hours beforehand, as this may increase the chance of temporary bruising.
- Avoiding intense exercise just before your appointment.
- Feeling unwell? please let us know. Alos if you have any active skin irritation or inflammation.
- Scheduling – we recommend scheduling treatment at a time when you have no important events soon after, in case minor redness or small marks temporarily appear.
- Medication & Supplements* being aware that certain medications and supplements, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and others that may thin the blood, can increase the risk of bruising.
- Avoid vitamin E or fish oil supplements for a few days prior to your treatment.
- Vaccinations – please do not have any type of injectables two weeks before or 3 weeks after a Covid vaccination / or any type of vaccination.
*Please do not stop any medication unless you have been advised by your doctor.
Aftercare
Your clinician will provide full aftercare guidance at your appointment. To support the best healing and treatment outcome:
- Avoid touching or rubbing the treated areas immediately after treatment
- Keep your face upright for several hours
- Avoid heat, steam rooms, and intense exercise for the remainder of the day
- Makeup can usually be applied later the same day once the skin is settled
- Minor redness, small bumps, or light swelling usually settle quickly
- Avoid having any other cosmetic treatments in the same area for two weeks to allow the muscle-relaxing injections to settle fully

What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are smooth, gel-like injections made from hyaluronic acid a substance naturally found in the skin. They are used to restore lost volume, enhance facial contours, and soften deeper lines, creating a more balanced, youthful, and refreshed appearance.
Unlike anti-wrinkle injections, which relax the muscles, dermal fillers work by adding structure and support, beneath the skin. This makes them ideal for treating areas where lines are caused by volume loss rather than muscle movement.
Results are immediate, natural-looking, and can last between 9–18 months, depending on the area treated.

Who Should Avoid Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers may not be suitable if:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have a known allergy to hyaluronic acid fillers
- You have an active infection, acne flare, or cold sore in the area
- You have recently had other treatments in the same area
- You are feeling unwell on the day of your appointment
- Your clinician determines treatment is not appropriate for your anatomy or goals
- If you have an allergy to bee or wasp stings please tell your clinician, this could mean you should avoid dermal fillers
- Your suitability will always be assessed thoroughly during consultation.
Aftercare
To help your treatment settle beautifully:
- Avoid touching or massaging the area unnecessarily.
- Avoid intense heat (saunas, steam rooms), strenuous exercise, and alcohol for 24 hours.
- Minor swelling, redness, or bruising is normal and typically resolves within a few days.

Dissolving Dermal Filler with Hyaluronidase (Hylase)
What Is Hyaluronidase?
Hyaluronidase (often known as Hylase) is an enzyme that can safely break down hyaluronic acid dermal filler. Because most modern fillers are made from hyaluronic acid – a substance naturally found in the skin – this enzyme allows unwanted or uneven filler to be dissolved.
Use of Hyaluronidase in Emergencies due to Rare Complications
- Although dermal fillers are generally very safe when carried out by trained and experienced clinicians, rare complications can occur. One of the most serious is vascular compromise, where filler unintentionally affects a blood vessel. This requires immediate recognition and management by a trained medical professional.
- In these rare situations, hyaluronidase may be used urgently to dissolve the hyaluronic acid filler involved. This treatment must be administered promptly by an appropriately qualified clinician, as delays may increase the risk of complications. Your safety is always the priority, and your clinician is trained to recognise concerns and act accordingly.
When Can Hyaluronidase Be Used?
Please note, Hyaluronidase is only effective on hyaluronic acid fillers – not other types of fillers. It may be used by a qualified clinician in situations such as:
- A patient does not like the appearance of a filler result
- Filler has migrated or created unevenness
- A previous filler treatment performed elsewhere needs correcting
- The area needs to be returned to its natural state before new treatment is planned
- Overfilled areas
- Lumps or bumps caused by filler
- Filler placed too superficially
